The CEO of a leading non-profit cybersecurity organization speaks out about the challenges associated with determining malware criminality in the newest episode of “Inside Network Security.” This expert was eager to participate in Norman Shark’s video series, but asked for anonymity, to ensure hacktivists would be unable to discover and threaten his work. In “Looking for Criminals,” he discusses how his association dissects malware to determine the threat’s motive and intent, tracing it back to the criminal or hacktivist behind the act. These deep analyses allow the organization to chart trends and predict threat levels to help companies secure their networks.
He notes that enhanced security is critical to protecting today’s Internet, used by people for everything from ecommerce to entertainment. Whole continents have skipped usage of PCs and moved to mobile devices for their core communications. To illustrate the point, he cites that $8 trillion in ecommerce revenue flow in and out of the U.S. alone each year.
In addition to partnerships between ISPs and content providers to ensure a steady stream of content delivery to consumers, ISPs are also partnering with security companies to make certain that stream of content (and revenue) receives optimal protection.
User safety will soon become a major point of differentiation for ISPs and telecommunications companies. Thanks to intelligence from organizations such as the one featured here, mobile internet industry leaders are taking more precautions against cybercriminals. Sharing information and warnings against widespread attacks and their source is the first step toward higher security standards.
